Straw defiant after suicide bombings
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is adamant that the latest bomb attacks in Iraq will not deter coalition troops from their humanitarian and peace keeping efforts in the strife-torn country.
His defiant words came after a second suicide bomb in Iraq on Wednesday killed up to 47 people, pushing the death toll near to 100 in the past 48 hours.
The bomb at the army recruiting centre in Baghdad yesterday came after Monday’s attack on a police station in Iskandariyah which left up to 53 dead.
Mr Straw said in a statement: “The perpetrators of the shocking attacks of the last two days clearly care nothing for the people of Iraq.
“They callously targeted those Iraqis who wanted to serve their countrymen and work to build a safer future for all.
“My sympathies are with the friends and families of those who lost their lives. I say to them that we will not let the terrorists succeed in deterring us from working together to build a stable and democratic Iraq with proper rule of law.”
Separately, two US soldiers were killed and one wounded in a road side bomb attack in western Baghdad at 21:30 local time last night (18:30 GMT).
