Iran pledges to pen additional protocol
“Axis of evil” member Iran is to sign a binding international agreement in the next few days that will permit unfettered inspection of its nuclear facilities.
Under pressure from the EU and US, Tehran is to finally add its name to the body of signatories backing the additional protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Iran had committed itself to signing the protocol on October 21 after an agreement was brokered with the UK, France and Germany, but held back on putting pen to paper.
But Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi yesterday said Iran would sign the protocol “in the next few days.”
The US insists Iran has a covert nuclear program to build nuclear bombs but Tehran says its atomic program is for domestic energy production.
Last month the IAEA, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, condemned Iran for 18 years of “lies” regarding its nuclear activities.
