Former Sky reporter committed suicide

An inquest was told yesterday that former Sky News reporter James Forlong committed “suicide” after he left his job following charges of doctoring a report on the Iraq war.

Mr Forlong was accused of sexing up the report screened on Sky on 29 March about the firing of a cruise missile from a Royal Navy submarine in the Gulf.

He resigned after admitting to a “lapse of judgement” in presenting library pictures as live footage.

Mr Forlong was found dead by his wife Elaine in the early hours of Saturday, October 4th, at their home in Hove, East Sussex.

The 44-year old was found hanging from a door bracket.

Mrs Forlong told the inquest: “At about 2am I was woken by my son. I went to the study to get James to help me.

“I could not open the study door and realised something was blocking it. I pushed harder and that was when I discovered James and I immediately called the emergency services.

“The manner of his death was a terrible shock, one I could not have predicted and perhaps will never understand.”

Mrs Forlong described the acclaimed reporter and husband as a “good and gentle man.”
