Prince Charles moves to dispel rumours
Prince Charles has denied any involvement in a controversial “incident,” allegedly witnessed by a servant.
He has categorically denied the incident ever took place.
On his behalf, a statement from Clarence House read: “In recent days, there have been media reports concerning an allegation that a former Royal Household employee witnessed an incident some years ago involving a senior member of the Royal Family.
“The allegation was that the Prince of Wales was involved in the incident. This allegation is untrue.”
The statement continued: “There is a particular sadness about this allegation because it was made by a former Royal Household employee who, unfortunately, has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and has previously suffered from alcoholism following active service in the Falklands.
“He has, in the past, made other unrelated allegations, which the police have fully investigated, and found to be unsubstantiated.”
Newspapers are said to have held details of the apparent scandal for 12 months, but have thus far refrained from publicising the story. The story is said to be so sensational it could destroy the institution of the Royal Family.
The Guardian newspaper says it has the right to name Michael Fawcett, a close servant of Prince Charles, as the man who intervened to threaten the Mail on Sunday with libel for printing the story this week.
The Mail on Sunday says the story’s content was of the “utmost importance” and pertained to matters of “the deepest public interest.”
