Phillip ‘disapproved’ of Charles’ affair

Prince Phillip reportedly wrote to Princess Diana confessing that he and the Queen “disapproved” of Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Philip allegedly told the Princess: “I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla.”

The letter, published in a book by Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, was written in the summer of 1992.

In the note, published in the Daily Mirror as part of its serialisation of Mr Burrell’s book, A Royal Duty, the Queen’s husband reportedly told Diana: “We do not approve of either of you having lovers. Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”

The Daily Mirror article also contains details of other correspondence in which the Duke allegedly tried to blame Diana for Charles’ relationship with Camilla.

In one letter the Duke reportedly told the Princess that being married to Charles “involved much more than simply being a hero with the British people”.

He also asked her if she could “honestly look into her heart” and say the affair was nothing to do with her behaviour towards him, the newspaper said.

Mr Burrell claims the letters had “upset and infuriated” Diana but that she respected Prince Phillip’s honesty.

Yesterday, the paper printed details of a letter, reportedly by Diana, in which the Princess expressed concern that she would die in a car crash.

Diana and Dodi Fayed were killed in Paris in 1997, when the Mercedes they were travelling in crashed in the Pont D’Alma tunnel in Paris.
