Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah have announced the birth of their son at Edinburgh’s New Royal Infirmary today.
The Chancellor’s spokesman said that mother and baby were doing “fine” and confirmed that the birth took place on Friday morning.
“Sarah Brown gave birth today at 09:28 BST to a baby boy,” the spokesman said.
“He weighed 8lb 1oz. Both mother and baby are doing fine.
“Sarah and Gordon have not yet decided on a name. They and their families are delighted.”
The chancellor was present at the birth and it is understood that he will take paternity leave.
Both Mr Brown and his wife expressed their thanks to the staff at the hospital.
The Brown’s first child, Jennifer Jane, described by the couple as an “inspiration”, was born seven weeks early on December 28th, 2001.
She was delivered by Caesarean section and weighed just 2lb 4oz. Her condition deteriorated after her birth and she died in her parents’ arms ten days later on January 7th.
The chancellor and his wife, who works under her maiden name of Sarah Macaulay, were married in August 2000 at a private ceremony in North Queensferry, Fife.
