Concorde flight cut short

A Concorde flight from the USA was forced to land in Wales because of an engine fault.

The flagship plane suffered an engine surge en route to Heathrow from New York’s JFK Airport, and was forced to fly part of the journey at subsonic speeds.

The fault, which is not believed to have endangered passengers, caused the aircraft to burn more fuel than usual and resulted in it having to land at Cardiff International Airport instead of Heathrow.

Engineers are working to fix the aircraft in Cardiff, and it is expected to complete its journey to Heathrow later today.

However the delay has caused several passengers to miss their connecting flights, and all had to reach London’s largest airport by road.

Concorde’s operators, British Airways and Air France, controversially decided to retire the aircraft, famed for crusing at 50,000 feet and twice the speed of sound, later this year. It will be returning to Cardiff next month as part of its final tour.
