Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru has elected folk singer Dafydd Iwan as their new party president.

Mr Iwan, already vice-president, overcame opposition from former policy director Cynog Dafis to take the job.

Mr Iwan obtained 2,980 votes compared to Mr Dafis’s 2,125.

The party president job became available after Ieuan Wyn Jones relinquished his post after suffering poor assembly election results.

But Mr Jones fought for and secured the Welsh assembly leadership post.

He defeated Helen Mary Jones by 71 votes.

He won 2,603 votes, against Helen Mary Jones’ 2,532.

Mr Jones said: “The party must work together from top to bottom – the assembly group, at Westminster, in Europe and in local government – as a united party pulling together.”

Speaking after the election results were announced, Mr Iwan said he looked forward to leading the campaign “for a free Wales.”
