Ambush kills three Brits in Basra

Three British Royal Military Police have been killed and a fourth seriously wounded in Basra, southern Iraq on Saturday.

Gunmen opened fire and a bomb was thrown at the soldiers’ vehicles, witnesses said.

The soldiers’ car smashed into a wall, injuring an Iraqi woman and two children.

The Ministry of Defence said the ambush took place around 08:30 local time (05:30 BST.

The MoD said it was “unprovoked.”

Five other deaths have been reported in Kurdish parts of Iraq.

Police in Kirkuk killed three Turkmen and US forces killed two demonstrators in the northern of Tuz Khurmatu, just south of Kirkuk.

In total, 10 British soldiers have been killed in combat in Iraq since the war ended on May 1.
