Four death sentences in Casablanca trial
A Moroccan court has sentenced four men to death for their role in the May 16 suicide bombings in Casablanca.
The attack killed 33 bystanders. 12 suicide bombers died.
All four defendants were found guilty of premeditated murder for plotting attacks against a Spanish restaurant, a five-star hotel and a Jewish community centre.
The accused are thought to have links with the Islamic extremist group, Salafist
Jihad movement.
Some of the extremists had indirect links to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda, the court was told.
Survivors of the 14-member suicide bombing squad, Mohamed Omari and Rachid Jalil, admitted to carrying out the attacks.
Alongside Yassine Lahnech, accused of having indoctrinated recruits to the group, was Hassan Taoussi, an active member of a para-terrorist group.
It is not know at present if the death sentences will be exercised or commuted
