Ban on secret DNA testing proposed
The Government is proposing to introduce legislation which will make it illegal to take or use DNA samples without consent.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, new laws could be in place by as early as next Autumn and are designed primarily to deter secret paternity tests.
Around 10,000 such tests are reported to be taken in the UK each year, but it is unclear how many are without consent.
DNA tests can also predict the likelihood of such diseases as Alzheimer’s.
Reports of journalists trying to obtain the DNA of high-profile figures by stealing mugs, dental floss or even hairs from their head, led to the Human Genetics Commission to call for legislation last year.
And the new Health Secretary, Dr. John Reid, is expected to publish a White Paper on genetic engineering within the next two weeks.
According to the Telegraph, the White Paper will also endorse recommendations of a second paper from the HGC, chaired by Baroness Kennedy and published this April.
