Five Britons held over Tel Aviv suicide bombing
It has been reported that British anti-terrorist police have arrested five people in connection with Wednesday’s suicide bombing in Tel Aviv.
According to a spokeswoman, four people (two men and two women) were arrested in Derbyshire, while one woman was also arrested in Nottinghamshire.
They were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, and have since been taken to a police station in central London
The attack happened on Wednesday when Briton Asif Hanif, 21, blew himself up outside a nightclub, killing three Israelis and injuring 55 more.
Hanif’s believed accomplice, Omar Kahn Sharif, has gone into hiding following the attack, where his device failed to detonate.
It has since been announced that the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, has ordered that all UK-based accounts owned by the men are to be frozen.
According to BBC online the two men were taught by a ‘spiritual leader’ based in North London.
Speaking to the BBC, Sheikh Moar Bakri said: ‘I knew both of them, but I did not know them except on the level as teacher and student.’
The cleric is the founder of the fundamentalist Muslim group al-Muhajiroun in Britain. When asked he refused to condemn the attack, which has been condemmed by most sections of the Muslim community.
