The variability of broadband speeds across the country has been brought into sharp focus by the sudden shift to home working and home schooling.
Yesterday, Labour MP Darren Jones called for a new ‘social tariff’ to be introduced for broadband for children on free school meals.
Orkney and Shetland has the highest number of lines in the UK receiving less than 10 Mbps, which is below Ofcom’s definition of ‘decent broadband’.
Residents of Kingston-Upon-Hull and Birmingham, on the other hand, have the best access to Gigabit broadband, which offers speeds of 1,000 Mbps – significantly faster than even ‘superfast’ broadband, which is at least 30Mbps by Ofcom’s definition.
