Abbott: ‘Very strong case for joint enterprise’
Labour leadership candidate Diane Abbott comments to the Today programme on potential reforms to murder prosecutions and argues for the continuing existence of joint enterprise legislation which allows accomplices in murder cases to be charged with murder themselves:
“[Joint enterprise] is a way of nailing murderous gangs.”
“I understand why the legal commission is calling for a review, and I would support a review but there is a very strong case for using [joint enterprise] legitimately.”
“Going to first/second/third degree murder might not necessarily alter any gang members’ willingness to give evidence.
“We delude ourselves if we think that introducing gradations of murder will break down the culture that makes gang members so reluctant to grass”.
