Plaid: Labour record on civil rights was appalling
Plaid Cymru spokesperson for justice Elfyn Llwyd comments on the counter-terrorism review:
“I am glad that we are going to have a full investigation into some of the most illiberal and authoritarian legislation that was introduced by Labour, and I am sure that many of these will be repealed once the evidence has been collected.
“Labour were the party that effectively believed in the state spying on people and holding them without proper evidence.
“Their record on civil rights was appalling.
“We have all heard of the misuse of these powers, such as some members of the police stopping people taking photographs and asylum seekers sent home and put in danger, never mind their attempts to make everyone carry an identity card.
“This week, Parliament will be discussing another Labour idea which failed to tackle terrorism – the 28 day detention period before charging suspects with offences.
“The Liberal Democrats have always voted against this particular piece of legislation. I hope that they will be voting against it once again tomorrow.”
