Laura Trott is the chief secretary to the Treasury having been appointed to the role in Rishi Sunak’s November 2023 reshuffle.
Laura Trott is the Conservative MP for Sevenoaks, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a majority of 20,818.
The Sevenoaks constituency is found within the county of Kent and broadly follows the the south eastern corner of the M25. It covers the towns of Sevenoaks, and Swanley and a number of affluent villages in the Darent Valley. Prime commuting territory into the city of London, the constituency of Sevenoaks was previously represented by the Conservative Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon.
Laura Trott was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Work and Pensions in October 2022 – a post in which she served until her promotion in November 2023.
Trott was previously a PPS at the Department of Transport but resigned in July 2022 in protest at Boris Johnson continuing to remain as prime minister.
Born in 1984, this Laura Trott, is not to be confused with the multiple gold medal winning Olympic cyclist, Laura Trott.
Having studied history and economics at Oxford University, Laura Trott the politician, worked as a management consultant at Booz and Company.
She grew up close to Sevenoaks, in the nearby village of Oxted, where the Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer also spent his childhood, some years before.
Transferring to politics, Trott worked as a Special Advisor in the Cabinet Office between 2010 and 2012, and then served in the Number 10 Policy Unit under David Cameron. She was said to have been heavily involved in the writing of the Conservative Party’s 2015 election manifesto.
She later served as David Cameron’s Director of Strategic Communication. Awarded an MBE in his resignation honours list, she then moved to work for Portland Communications in 2017.
She is married with three young children, and an ambassador for the Sutton Trust.
Since being elected to Westminster, she has presented a Bill looking to restrict access to botulinum toxin and filler cosmetic products to those who are under 18.
During the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election, Trott suggested to the BBC Newsnight programme that a Boris Johnson victory would lead to an early General Election that Jeremy Corbyn would win.
