Richard Thomson is the Scottish National Party MP for Gordon, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019, gaining the seat off the Conservatives with a majority of just 819.
The Gordon constituency is a large rural constituency found within the county of Aberdeenshire. It covers the towns of Dyce, Huntly, and Inverurie, as well as some of the northern suburbs of the city of Aberdeen itself. Now an SNP and Conservative marginal, it was for many years a solid Liberal Democrat constituency.
Mr Thomson is the SNP’s Northern Ireland spokesperson at Westminster.
Born in 1976, Richard Thomson studied History and Politics at the University of Stirling, and then took an MBA at Edinburgh Business School. He previously worked for Scottish Widows in Edinburgh as an Account Manager in Corporate Pensions. He is now Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Management, and on Pensions.
Before being elected to Parliament, Thomson had more recently served as the Head of Research and Campaigns for the Scottish National Party. He has also acted as the Deputy Editor of the Scots Independent newspaper.
He was elected to Aberdeenshire Council in 2012. Thomson is tipped to rise to senior levels within the SNP in the future.
In the spring of 2022, Richard Thomson called UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ‘Pinocchio’ in the House of Commons during weekly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).
At Westminster he is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Hydrogen, and on Cleaning and Hygiene.
