Layla Moran is the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017. Layla was re-elected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 8,943.
The constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon, contains the north of the city of Oxford and a portion of Oxfordshire countryside including the town of Abingdon. Formerly represented at Westminster by the Conservative Cabinet Minister John Patten in the 1980s, it has traditionally been a Conservative – Liberal Democrat marginal. A high 62% of the local population here supported Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Having been defeated in the 2020 Liberal Democrat leadership election, Layla Moran serves as the Party’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson. She was previously the party’s spokesperson on Education.
Born in 1982, Layla Moran was educated at Imperial College London and Brunel University. She worked as a maths and physics teacher before being elected to Parliament. She has also worked with an Oxford-based Education company to deliver revision courses.
Moran is the first MP to openly identify themselves as pansexual, as well as beig the first MP of Palestinian descent.
Moran was previously involved in a row with a former boyfriend at a 2013 Lib Dem party conference over a lost computer cable. This led to the police being called, after he was allegedly slapped by Ms Moran.
Moran speaks French fluently along with some Spanish, Arabic and Greek.
