Saqib Bhatti is the Conservative MP for Meriden, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a majority of 22,836 over the Labour Party.
The Meriden constituency is found within the West Midlands. It is named after the village of Meriden within the middle of the constituency and composes the rural area known as the Meriden gap between the west Midlands conurbation and Coventry. It also covers the larger settlements of Balsall Common and the Chelmsey Wood estate on the edge of Birmingham. A marginal seat after the war, this area has now been loyal to the Conservatives ever since 1979.
Mr Bhatti was previously a PPS at the Department of Health but resigned in July 2022 in protest at Boris Johnson continuing to remain as prime minister.
Born in Walsall in 1985, Saqib Bhatti studied law at the London School of Economics. He then trained as a chartered accountant and as a financial auditor, before joining his family firm of Chartered accounts, where he was appointed a director in 2012. He has remained a director of the firm after being elected to Westminster.
Saqib Bhatti served as the President of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, before being elected to Parliament.
Bhatti is a Muslim, and in 2020 he was awarded an MBE for services to Diversity and Inclusion in Business Communities. Bhatti has also served as a Board Member of the West Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
A supporter of Brexit, he formerly sat on the Board of the campaign group, Vote Leave.
He is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Horses and Small and Micro Businesses, and a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Brazil, Digital Health.
