Khalid Mahmood was first elected as the Labour MP for Birmingham, Perry Barr in 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 15,317.
The constituency of Birmingham Perry Barr covers the north western area of Birmingham. It includes the wards of Oscott, Perry Barr and the inner city district of Handsworth. This is an ethnically diverse area. The seat has been held comfortably by the Labour Party ever since 1974. The Alexander Stadium, home to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is found here.
Mahmood served as Shadow Minister for Defence Procurement between 2020 and 2021. He was Shadow Minister for State for Europe between 2016 and 2020.
He briefly considered a run for the position as Deputy Labour leader in 2020, but pulled out of the contest early.
Born in 1961 in Pakistan, Mahmood studied engineering at the University of Central England. He worked as an engineer before becoming a Member of Parliament. He is a former trade union official.
In 2021, Mahmood stood down from the Labour front bench and was critical of the party’s leadership under Keir Starmer.
He suggested Labour was losing touch its working class roots, writing that, “Labour has lost touch with ordinary British people. A London-based bourgeoisie, with the support of brigades of woke social media warriors, has effectively captured the party”.
Mahmood has previously served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Home Office during the Blair government, but resigned at that point, writing to Tony Blair calling for him to step down as Prime Minister.
Mahmood served on Birmingham City Council between 1990 and 1993. Having previously been on dialysis for many years, he had a kidney transplant in 2014.
Mahmood backed Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn, but nominated the left’s choice of Rebecca Long Bailey in the 2020 Labour leadership election. In the 2015 contest, he supported Yvette Cooper.
Mahmood has served as an advisor to the think tank, policy exchange, on issues around extremism.
Khalid Mahmood is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Terrorism; and International Relations. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Sovereign Defence Capability; Kuwait; Kyrgystan; the Commonwealth Games; and Cyber Security.
