Michael Ellis was first elected as Conservative MP for Northampton North in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 5,507.
The Northampton North constituency covers the areas of the town around Abington, Eastfield, Kinglsey, Kingsthorpe, and Parklands. More compact than the other Northampton constituency, this seat contains the University of Northampton. With an economic profile very close to the national average, Northampton North is the ultimate marginal, and arguably the one seat to watch in any General Election. It has been won by the government of the day in every General Election since 1974.
Ellis was appointed as Attorney General, attending Cabinet, in September 2022. He left the role in October 2022 when Rishi Sunak became prime minister. This was despite him being the only member of the then Boris Johnson cabinet who backed Rishi Sunak during the 2022 Conservative party leadership election.
Ellis previously served as the Minister for the Cabinet Officer and Paymaster General.
In this role he was frequently required to defend the Johnson government over partygate allegations in the House of Commons.
He served as Solicitor General within the government between 2019 and 2021.
He formerly served as Minister of State for Transport (2019), Under Secretary of State for Arts, Heritage and Tourism (2018-2019), and Deputy Leader of the House of Commons (2016-2018).
Michael Ellis was born in October 1967 and was brought up in Northampton. After completing the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law in London in 1993, he began work at the Criminal Bar in Northampton.
He served on Northamptonshire County Council between 1997 and 2001.
He once tried to introduced a Private Members Bill in 2013 providing greater scope for doctors to innovate when treating cancer patients, albeit the bill was subsequently withdrawn.
Ellis was selected as the Conservative candidate for Northampton North by the general public in an Open Primary to be the Conservative Candidate.
