Justin Madders was first elected as the Labour MP for Ellesmere Port & Neston in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,764.
He currently serves as the Shadow Minister for Business, Employment Rights and Levelling Up.
The constituency of Ellesmere Port and Neston is found in the north western corner of Cheshire on the southern banks of the River Mersey just below the Wirral. The seat includes the industrial town of Ellesmere Port, alongside the smaller town of Neston and a number of villages such as Willaston and Elton. This is an industrial area in which many people are employed at the nearby vast Stanlow oil refinery and the Vauxhall motor factory. Although this area was represented by the Conservatives between 1983 and 1992, this seat has been held relatively comfortably by Labour ever since 1992. This constituency is set to be heavily redrawn under forthcoming boundary changes.
Madders served as the Shadow Minister for Secondary Care, Workforce and Patient health from April 2020 to December 2021.
Born in 1972, Madders grew up in this part of Cheshire. He was educated at Sheffield University and worked as an employment law solicitor before becoming an MP.
Madders was formerly a councillor on Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council between 1998 and 2009 and was leader of the local Council between 2007 and 2009.
Madders supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn. He backed Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
He enjoys playing football, and is Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Football Club Group.
Justin Madders is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Social Mobility; and Leasehold and Commonhold Reform. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence; Deaths Abroad, Consular Services and Assistance; Ending Homelessness; Mersey Dee North Wales; Motor. He is married with three children.
