Marie Rimmer was first elected as the Labour MP for St Helens South & Whiston in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 19,122.
St Helen’s South is a safe Labour constituency towards the east of Merseyside. The seat contains the centre of St Helens itself, alongside the large Pilkington Glass factory which has been based in the area for two hundred years.
Rimmer has served as an Opposition Whip since 2020. She served briefly as the Shadow Minister for Disabled People in 2017.
Rimmer supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge against then Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn. In 2020 she supported Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership.
Born in 1947, Rimmer grew up in St Helen’s and worked in the Pilkington Glass Factory, where she also became a union shop steward.
Rimmer was a long standing councillor on St Helen’s Council between 1978 and 2016. Before becoming an MP, Marie Rimmer was the Leader of the Council. In 2005, she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to local government.
She was previously charged with a charge of abusive or threatening behaviour following an alleged incident at a Glasgow Shettleston polling station during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, but was subsequently cleared of all charges.
