Downing Street dismisses war crimes claims
A statement issued by Downing Street has dismissed the case made by the Athens Bar Association as ‘groundless lawyers’ claims’
The Athens Bar Association has filed a case with the International Criminal Court regarding allegations that the British Government has committed war crimes because of its involvement in the Iraqi war.
The ABA cited the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, and others for violations of international law, human rights, a number of treaties, and ‘crimes against humanity and war crimes’.
In a statement, the group said that it felt there was an ethical need to seek action regarding the British government’s behaviour.
The group has confirmed that it is also planning to do the same against the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.
However, Downing Street refuted these claims: ‘As we have made clear on a number of occasions, the British Government has acted in accordance with international law.’
The International Criminal Court is a new body designed to take action only when a country is unable or lacks the political will to do so.
