Putin commences state visit
The Russian president Vladimir Putin is beginning a state visit to Britain today, the first Russian head of state to visit since 1874.
Mr Putin was greeted at Heathrow Airport by the Prince of Wales this afternoon, before being given a ceremonial welcome on Horse Guards by the Queen. He and his wife Ludmila will stay at Buckingham Palace during their three day stay.
The trip is in recognition of the close ties developed between Russia and Britain since the end of the Cold War. British officials seem confident that the very public differences between Mr Blair and Mr Putin over the Iraq war will not affect the atmosphere.
There will be a particular focus on cooperation in the energy sector. However when Tony Blair and Vladimir Putin have lunch at Downing Street on Thursday they are expected to discuss the Middle East peace as well as Iran and Russia’s support for its nuclear programme.
During his visit Mr Putin is also expected to visit a Russian naval ship and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich with the Duke of York as well as taking a short trip to Scotland.
