Israel and Hezbollah in tit-for-tat violence
Islamic militant group Hezbollah shelled the northern town of Shlomi in Israel on Sunday, killing Haviv Dadon, a 16-year-old boy, and wounding five others, according to reports.
Should the claims prove to have substance, it would be the first time an Israeli has been killed by the Hezbollah since the Jewish nation’s armed forces withdrew from south Lebanon in 2000.
Hezbollah admitted to firing anti-aircraft guns at Israeli planes, which were reportedly flying inside the Lebanese border.
“An air defence unit of the Islamic resistance confronted enemy planes that violated Lebanese sovereignty over the western sector of south Lebanon,” the group said.
Israel retaliated with air strikes on assumed Hezbollah positions near the southern Lebanese village Tayr Harfa. Explosions were heard in the area, witnesses said.
The tit-for-tat violence came as Israel demanded of the UN that it force Lebanon and Syria – alleged supporters of Hezbollah – to detain and restrain the group.
