Libya set to renounce terrorism
Libya has officially apologised for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, which killed 270 people in Scotland.
A letter was sent to the United Nations Security Council stating that Libya would take full responsibility for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
The United Nations is expected to imminently discuss a resolution lifting sanctions against Libya.
As well coming up with a 1.7 billion pounds compensation package to families of the tragedy, Libya’s government is thought to have officially renounced terrorism.
Libya will pay about 675 million pounds into the Bank for International Settlements if the Security Council lifts UN sanctions.
The remaining 1 billion pounds will be paid when Libya is removed from the UN’s list of terror states.
Each family will receive around 5 million pounds compensation.
Libyan Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was convicted of the bombing in 2001 and is in jail in Scotland.
