Ton e-Blair
In a bid to further the roll out of e-democracy across government, voters can now contact Prime Minister Tony Blair directly using email, Downing Street has announced.
Email has become the medium of choice for millions of people. Downing Street has recognised this, albeit belatedly, and introduced the option on its website, www.number-10.gov.uk, where voters can directly contact the PM by email, a move, No 10 says, which will promote “greater two-way communication with the public.”
The PM will receive a monthly report on the contents of his email inbox. Every email sender will get an automated response.
Mr Blair received around one million items of post last year.
A Downing Street spokesman forecasted more correspondence following the electronic option: “We expect the number of emails to be greater than that figure but we can’t say by how much. We do believe we will be able to provide a response to demand, like we had on the site during the Iraq war, with the publication of the dossiers.”
The system is estimated to have cost 11,000 pound to set up.
Emailers can express their views via a 25-option drop down list.
The list covers everything from the economy, farming and immigration to road safety and weapons of mass destruction.
