Two arrested over Omagh atrocity
Police investigating the 1998 Omagh bombing arrested a married couple in Northern Ireland yesterday.
More than 200 police officers and soldiers took part in the arrest of the alleged Real IRA member and his wife in an early morning swoop, in the village of Jonesborough, situated in the republican stronghold of South Armagh.
At Gough Barracks in Armagh last night, detectives questioned the unnamed man regarding “serious terrorist offences” pertaining to the 500lb car bomb that killed 29 people and injured more than 200 bystanders in the County Tyrone town centre on August 15, 1998.
Under anti-terrorist legislation, the couple can be kept for 48 hours without being charged.
The Omagh bombing has been described as the worst single atrocity in during The Troubles.
The Government last month announced plans to provide financial aid for families whose loved ones died in the Omagh bombing.
Families want to take out civil action against five people suspected of involvement in the bombing.
It is believed up to 800,000 pounds has been pledged by the Government.
