Arnie wins California Governor race
Californian Governor Gray Davis will be removed from office after record numbers of American voters in the west coast state backed global film icon Arnold Schwarzenegger in the recalled election, according to media reports.
According to exit poll forecasts, when all votes are counted, Mr Schwarzenegger will take office as the new governor of the Golden State.
An estimated 10 million Californians voted in the election.
Voters adjudged Mr Schwarzenegger the man for the job despite his lack of political experience.
Mr Davis, a Democrat, was re-elected only in November and is the first governor of California ever to be ousted mid-term. He was accused by Republican opposition of mismanaging the vast Californian economy.
With more than half the votes counted, Republican Mr Schwarzenegger has secured almost 50 per cent.
“I want to be the governor of the people,” Mr Schwarzenegger declared in his victory speech.
“I know that together we can make this the greatest state in the greatest country in the world.”
The Terminator star was elected despite recent reports that he sexually harassed women and once praised Hitler.
