Public still cautious on PM’s war decision
An opinion poll for ITV1’s Jonathan Dimbleby programme found that 40 per cent of voters still believe that Prime Minister Tony Blair distorted the facts about Saddam Hussein’s capacity to launch weapons of mass destruction.
The YouGov poll also found more than half of respondents remained at odds with the decision to back the US-led war to oust the former Iraq dictator from power.
Forty six per cent of respondents said they thought the war was right, while forty one per cent took the opposite view.
Some 49 per cent of voters believed that Mr Blair’s pre-war statements about Saddam’s WMD capability were acceptable at the time but 41 per cent said he deliberately “distorted” information.
YouGov questioned some 1,709 people on Thursday and Friday for the poll.
