Leaves on the line threaten rail delays
Network Rail has warned passengers that they may suffer delays on the railways this week due to leaves on the line.
The annual problem, which causes disruption to passengers every Autumn, has been exacerbated by high winds and rain.
Network Rail say that they are working hard to tackle the issue that many passengers feel is a weak excuse for disruption. Extra manpower and equipment has been brought into tackle the leaves and engineering works have been cancelled to allow better access to the tracks.
Rail companies have been cutting down many trees hanging over lines to try and prevent the problem, however this has been met with criticism from local residents who are unhappy that the natural barrier from the railway is being removed.
Leaves on the line cost the railway industry approximately £50 million every year. The problem is caused when the leaves form a hard coating on the railhead that causes train wheels to slip and slide.
