Soham jury trace final steps
The jury in the trial of Ian Huntley, the man accused of murdering Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, visited the Cambridgeshire town today.
The jury of seven women and five men were taken to the house where Holly and Jessica were allegedly killed.
Green metal cladding had surrounded the house, the former home of Mr Huntley and his ex-girlfriend Maxine Carr, but that was removed prior to the visit. The house at 5 College Close had been stripped bare as part of the investigation.
The jurors were driven from the Old Bailey to Soham to see the area where the 10-year-olds lived in a coach with blacked out windows.
They were driven past Jessica’s house. At Holly’s family home in Redhouse Gardens the coach stopped and the jury got out, walking up Tanners Lane and turning right into Sand Street, following the route the girl’s took before they disappeared.
The jurors paused at the war memorial in the centre of the village to listen to Richard Latham QC, lead counsel for the prosecution.
The jury then turned round and walked back down Sand Street before heading right into Gidney Lane towards the sports centre where Holly and Jessica were captured on CCTV on the day they vanished.
They went on to Soham Village College where they visited the hangar building where the girl’s clothes were eventually discovered.
Trial judge, Mr Justice Moses, and the prosecution and defence legal teams accompanied the jury to East Anglia.
The jury is expected to be taken to the ditch near Lakenheath in Suffolk where Holly and Jessica’s bodies were found almost two weeks after they vanished.
Last week the prosecution outlined its case against Mr Huntley and Ms Carr, who is accused of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.
Holly and Jessica went missing from Soham on August 4th 2002. Their bodies were found on August 17th.
Mr Huntley denies two counts of murder but has admitted to one count of perverting the course of justice. Ms Carr denies all charges against her.
The case continues.
