Former Iranian ambassador given leave to remain
The Home Secretary has refused to extradite a senior Iranian diplomat accused of collaborating in the bombing of a Jewish community centre in Argentina in 1994.
David Blunkett rejected the arrest warrant against Hadi Soleimanpour, former Iranian ambassador to Argentina.
Eighty-five people were killed in the bombing of the Buenos Aires Jewish centre in Argentina.
The 47-year-old will be allowed to continue his PhD studies in eco-tourism at the University of Durham, the Home Office said.
A Home Office spokesman said: “The prima facie case is not sufficient to warrant further action.”
Mr Soleimanpour was arrested in Durham in the summer but was released in September after his bail, set at £730,000, was paid for by Iranian authorities.
Mr Soleimanpour insists he had nothing to do with the atrocities.
