Iraqi self-determination by June 2004
The US government and provisional Iraqi governing council have agreed a timetable for the transfer of democratic powers to the Iraqi people.
A new era in the war torn country will start on June 20th 2004 when sovereignty and self-determination are handed back to Iraqis. Elections have been pencilled in before the end of 2005.
The agreement was signed on Saturday between US administrator in Iraq Paul Bremer and Jalal Talabani, chair of the Iraqi Governing Council.
The agreement on the “Fundamental Law” included a Bill of Rights, guaranteeing basic rights to free speech, religion and equality before the law regardless of gender, sect, and ethnicity.
It came after another US soldier was killed in Baghdad by a roadside bomb.
Two other soldiers in the convoy were wounded.
