Lord Robertson tipped for BNFL job
Lord Robertson, the present secretary-general of Nato, is rumoured to be in line for the chairmanship of British Nuclear Fuels, the nuclear services organisation.
Last week, Hugh Collum, BNFL chairman, announced he would be standing down next year.
Following trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt’s intervention, plans to sell up to 49 per cent of BNFL were shelved. Mr Collum’s leadership was severely dented as a result.
Other candidates for the post may include Norman Askew, former chief executive, and Brian Wilson, the former energy minister.
Mr Collum, announcing his decision to stand down next summer, said: “It will be an appropriate time for me to move aside. I will have been chairman for nearly five years. Mike Parker [BNFL’s chief executive] will have been in the job for 12 months. The bill to establish the decommissioning authority should also be well advanced and the company’s new shape will have been determined.”
