Schwarzenegger takes office
Movie icon Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday was sworn in as the 38th governor of California.
The 56-year-old Republican took the oath of office before 7,500 dignitaries and supporters.
Mr Schwarzenegger said after his inauguration: “I am humbled, I am honoured and I am moved beyond words to be your governor.
“I enter this office beholden to no-one except you, my fellow citizens. I pledge my governorship to your interests, not to special interests.”
The Terminator star obtained his first political post after the October 7th recall election, which saw Democratic governor Gray Davis booted out of office for failing to manage the Sunshine State’s economy.
The Californian economy currently has a deficit of some $10 billion (GBP6 billion).
Mr Schwarzenegger previously promised to repeal the increase in California’s car tax on his first day of office.
