US backs compromise resolution on Iran

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has backed a new compromise resolution on Iran’s nuclear programs between Washington and three European countries.

The US joined France, Germany and the UK in backing a UN nuclear resolution condemning Iran’s clandestine atomic program, insisting Tehran must embrace a new policy of unfettered co-operation.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is expected to discuss the resolution in Vienna on Wednesday; all 35 members are likely to accept it.

Mr Powell told reporters: “I’m very happy with the resolution. I’d like to thank my European Union colleagues who worked so hard on it. We’re pleased with it.”

He added the US was particularly pleased with the resolution’s statement that any future violation of international agreements by Iran would be immediately referred to the IAEA board.

The US had originally called the resolution “weak” as it would fail to act as a deterrent against future violations.

Iran was strongly criticised for 18 years of “lies” in a recent IAEA report. Iran was charged with covertly enriching uranium and producing plutonium.

French President Jacques Chirac also welcomed the compromise.

The draft reflects “efforts made by the international community to convince the Iranians to take all the measures needed to re-establish confidence,” Mr Chirac said.
