Taiwan explains “pacifist” referendum plan
Taiwan on Saturday said plans to hold a referendum on China’s missile threats were aimed at primarily at preventing war, not provoking one.
China has said the move planned for next March was “provocative” and warned previously it was ready for ‘necessary’ casualties if Taiwan pursued independence.
Historically, China has said it would invade Taiwan if the island ever proclaimed independence.
Taiwan’s president, Chen Shui-bian, in an interview with the New York Times, said a referendum would be held to ascertain the people’s views on China’s ballistic missiles, targeting at the island.
Mr Chen insists the ballot had little to do with the reunification dispute with China.
