At least 100 dead after landslides in Philippines
Death toll rises after devastating landslides in Philippines.
The death toll in landslides caused by week-long freak heavy rains in the Philippines was expected to exceed 100 today, after 35 bodies were recovered with dozens still unaccounted for.
Most Filipinos were asleep when the landslides hit San Francisco and Liloan towns in Southern Leyte province late Friday night, the Office of Civil Defence reported.
Rescue workers are being held back by minor landslides in the area which have blocked the only roads leading to the disaster area, a spokesman reported.
At least 80 houses have been buried in mud, according to rescue workers.
About 250 people have been pulled safely from the mud, as rescuers worked quickly to find survivors.
