Trichet and Prodi receive dodgy Christmas post
The presidents of the European Central Bank and the European Commission have both received suspected letter bombs in the past three days.
In Frankfurt, ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet was sent a suspected letter bomb, police said on Monday, two days after a booby-trapped parcel burst into flames in the hands of Romano Prodi at his home in Bologna, Italy.
The letter, addressed to Mr Prodi’s wife, included The Pleasure, a book by Gabriele D’Annunzio, an early supporter of fascism.
Another suspect letter bomb landed later on Monday on the doorstep of Europol, the EU’s police agency, in the Netherlands.
It was intercepted and later defused by bomb squad officers.
Police admit to having few clues as to the source of the letter bombs.
But the Informal Anarchic Federation, an anarchist group, said it was behind two other explosions in rubbish bins near Mr Prodi’s home in the past week.
The anarchists denounced Mr Prodi as a representative of a repressive “new European order.”
Bomb experts are to assess whether explosives were included in the letter sent to Mr Trichet. Results are expected Tuesday.
