Police last night sealed off York railway station after a reported sighting of the chief suspect in the murder of Pc Ian Broadhurst.
Armed police searched trains and platforms hunting American Nathan Wayne Coleman following a tip-off from a male flower seller.
The station was closed for about three hours but later reopened after 21:00GMT after officers said the assailant was not on the premises.
North Yorkshire Police refused to confirm the sighting was genuine.
Coleman was spotted in Bradford city centre on Saturday and in Brighouse town centre yesterday afternoon.
Pc Broadhurst was murdered on Boxing Day.
His colleague, Pc Neil Roper, was shot twice by the assailant and is still recovering in hospital.
A third officer, Pc James Banks, was also shot at but escaped serious injury.
Police say Coleman is highly dangerous and may be heavily armed.
