Parents face fines for term time holidays
The government is considering plans to fine parents who take their children out of school for family holidays during term time.
Ministers are concerned that efforts to raise standards in the classroom are being undermined by unauthorised absences.
Parents could be fined up to £100 for taking their children on holiday when they should be at school, unless they have the permission of the headteacher.
Term time holidays are often cheaper than peak time breaks, which could prompt some parents to accept the fine.
The move comes as part of a wider crack down on truancy.
The government will introduce the £100 fixed penalty notices for parents who fail to ensure that their children attend school in the New Year.
Truancy is a pressing issue for ministers, as research has suggested that it can lead to anti-social and criminal behaviour.
