Mass pro-democracy rally in Hong Kong
Tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets of Hong Kong on New Year’s Day demanding greater democracy.
A two mile long procession of protestors chanted “return power to the people,” “we want democracy – one man one vote” as they marched to government offices.
Organisers said 20,000-100,000 people joined the march through the Chinese controlled city.
Hong Kong police declined to give an estimate of numbers.
Protestors want to elect the next chief executive and the entire Legislature in the former British colony.
Half a million protesters held a mass demonstration in July 2003, calling for the right to elect their own leader and a relaxation of internal-security laws.
Pro-democracy activists now await to hear the contents of Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa’s annual policy speech on January 7.
