Carr to challenge early release ruling
Maxine Carr is said to be considering a High Court challenge after the rules for early release applications were changed.
Ms Carr, who is currently serving a three and a half year sentence for perverting the course of justice, was hoping to be released early under the Home Office’s electronic tagging scheme.
However, a change in the procedures will mean that Martin Narey, head of the newly merged National Offender Management Service, will decide her case and not the prison governor.
Government ministers have defended the decision to make the changes, claiming that high profile cases like Ms Carr’s would have an impact on public confidence in the criminal justice system.
Maxine Carr was jailed in December for perverting the course of justice during the investigation into the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.
Her former boyfriend Ian Huntley is currently serving life for abducting and killing the two schoolgirls.
Having already served a sizeable chunk of her sentence on remand, Ms Carr could be eligible for release with an electronic tag in May this year.
