Hoon to meet soldier’s widow
Geoff Hoon, the defence secretary, is reportedly planning to meet the widow of a British soldier, who was killed during the Iraq war.
Sergeant Steve Roberts was shot dead last year shortly after being ordered to hand back his body armour.
His widow Samantha claims the flak jacket could have saved his life and has been highly critical of the defence secretary for failing to properly equip British soldiers fighting in the Gulf.
In audiotapes sent back from Iraq, Sergeant Roberts spoke of his concerns about the shortage of essential equipment.
Speaking to Channel Four News last night, his widow said it would be “for the benefit of the country” for Geoff Hoon to go.
According to the BBC Mr Hoon now plans to meet Mrs Roberts in person.
The government has faced heavy criticism over problems experienced by British troops during the recent conflict.
A number of soldiers told their families in emails and phone calls that they lacked vital equipment.
