Tories call for 80mph speed limit

The Conservatives have called for an amendment to the government’s Traffic Management Bill, allowing motorists to drive at 80mph on motorways.

Shadow transport secretary Damian Green has asked for the current 70mph to be increased in order to give drivers “more freedom” when on motorways.

He believes it will not have any negligible affect on road safety, and has tabled an amendment at the Commons on the issue.

Mr Green’s comments come in the wake of growing discontent over the use of speed cameras on Britain’s roads, and increasing media attention directed towards the fines imposed on people caught speeding.

But while the Conservatives are advocating increased limits on the fastest roads, they want a wider use of the 20mph speed restrictions in areas around parks and schools.

Mr Green said this was a part of a “wider campaign” of the Tories to provide the country with more “realistic and appropriate speed limits.”

“We should be more sensible and more variable in the speed limits we have to reflect the dangers both to drivers and equally importantly to pedestrians, particularly to children,” he added.
