Hamas spiritual leader Yassin “killed”
Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin has been killed in an airstrike by Israeli forces Monday morning, according to press reports.
The wheelchair-bound Yassin was killed on his way to a local mosque.
Mosque loudspeakers declared Yassin was a “martyr.”
Yassin founded Hamas – a fundamentalist Islamic organisation – in 1987, during the Palestinian intifada.
In September, Yassin survived an Israeli missile strike in Gaza City. Then he vowed to continue the jihad war.
Israel has been fighting an offensive in the Gaza Strip against Hamas insurgents since a double suicide bombing attack in the Israeli port of Ashdod last week.
The attack claimed the life of ten Israelis and was reportedly carried out by two Palestinians who infiltrated Israel from Gaza.
