New daughter for London mayor
London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced the birth of his second child.
The 58-year-old’s partner, Emma Beal, gave birth to baby Mia at the Royal Free Hospital, in Hampstead, north London, on Saturday at 12:15 GMT.
In a statement issued through a spokeswoman, Mr Livingstone said: “All the staff in the hospital, and especially the maternity unit, were wonderful.”
The mayor now plans to take paternity leave, but will continue to deal with any urgent or important issues that arise.
Mr Livingstone’s first child Thomas was born in 2002. He met Ms Beal in 1996 when she was working at the London Evening Standard’s ES magazine, for which he was a restaurant critic.
They became an item after Mr Livingstone ended a 20-year relationship with Kate Allen, the UK director of Amnesty International.
Mr Livingstone married teacher Christine Chapman in 1973, but they divorced in 1982.
