Conservatives hail “excellent” local election results
The Conservative Party Chairman has said that this morning’s local election results show that the Conservatives have made excellent progress.
With 82 of the 166 council results in, the Conservative Party has gained control of six councils, taking the total of councils under its control to 30.
Dr Liam Fox said: “These are excellent results for the Conservatives. It is our biggest lead over Labour since 1992 and gives us the solid base we need to win the general election.
He claimed that: “It has been Labour’s worst electoral performance in living memory and it is the first time that a Government has been pushed into third place in mid-term elections.”
“We have made progress from a high base right across the country – winning back councils, especially in cities and towns, that we have not held for over a decade”.
Dr Fox told the BBC: “We have been suffering for number of years of being a party of rural England and we wanted to make sure that we were back in the Metropolitan areas and we are, in Michael Howard’s words, a party for Britain.’
The Conservatives are particularly pleased with their victory in Trafford, the first major Metropolitan Council to declare.
